What are the home remedies for mouth ulcer?

Mouth ulcers are painful sores that appear in the mouth. They aren’t contagious and usually go away within one to two weeks. It develops in the soft tissue lining of the gums, tongue, inner cheeks, lips or palate. They look like a large, white, circular shape and are usually red or yellow colour. They are usually harmless but uncomfortable.

Causes of mouth ulcer

  • Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections in the mouth
  • Vitamin deficiencies such as vitamin B9 (folate), vitamin B12, zinc, and iron
  • Stress
  • Hormonal changes occur during menstruation or pregnancy
  • Dental braces
  • Lack of sleep
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Diabetes
  • Excessive intake of citric fruits such as oranges, pineapples and strawberries
  • Toothpaste or mouthwash that contains sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)

Home remedies for mouth ulcer

Saltwater gargle: Salt has the antiseptic properties. It is very effective for mouth ulcer.

Coconut Oil: Coconut oil contains antimicrobial properties that help to reduce ulcers naturally. Apply a bit of coconut oil to the surface of the ulcer. It can reduce the pain due to mouth ulcers.

Honey: Honey is packed with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Honey reduce the pain and swelling of a mouth. Apply honey to the sores 3-4 times a day for best results. 

Baking soda rinse: It is another effective ingredient that help treat canker sores, restore the pH balance of mouth and minimizes swelling.

How to use:

  • Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 cup of water.
  • Swirl the salty solution in your mouth for around 20-30 seconds, then spit out
  • Repeat multiple times a day 

Rinse with apple cider vinegar (ACV): It kills the bacteria that make the sores painful.

How to use:

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a cup of water.
  • Rinse your mouth with this mixture for 30 to 60 seconds.

Icing: Icing will help relieve painful sensations. Apply ice pack to the affected area. It will soothe pain and discomfort. 

Garlic: The allicin content in garlic is effective in alleviating the pain and reducing the size of the mouth ulcer. Gently rub a small piece of garlic on the affected region for 3-5 minutes.
