Cardamom – It is a very common spice in Indian and Arabic cuisine. It has a slightly spicy and sweet flavor all mixed together. The seeds and extracts of cardamom have several health benefits and have been used in many alternative medicines.

Cardamom has an intense flavour. The seeds and the oil are used to make medicine. There are two main types of cardamom, black cardamom and green cardamom.

Health benefits:

  • Cardamom may be helpful for people with high blood pressure: Since cardamom is rich in antioxidants, they may be helpful for keeping high blood pressure under control. Moreover, it also helps in promoting urination (called diuretic effect), which helps to remove excess water around your heart. 
  • Has anti-Inflammatory properties: Acute inflammation, which is a short-term process which takes place when there is a muscle injury, is actually important. However, chronic inflammation can be harmful for your body.
  • Helps in maintaining good dental hygiene: It is very common in several parts of the world to chew on cardamom after a meal to freshen the breath. Several gum companies even use it as a flavor! It has the ability to fight mouth bacteria, that it is effective in keeping your breath fresh. 
  • It may be effective in treating infections: Oils extracted from cardamom have been shown to be effective in fighting and treating infections. Some test tube results showed that these oils may be effective in fighting bacteria which causes food poisoning. 
  • Help with digestive problems: Cardamom is helpful to prevent stomach issues and reduce the size of gastric ulcers.

As mentioned in the points above, cardamom has several health benefits. Consuming a little bit of it, whether in your curries or your tea can help in alleviating your health in some way or the other. Since it is a very versatile spice, you won’t find yourself having to eat it raw at anytime!
