Dates: What are the health benefits?

Even though dates have only recently become popular, they have been the staple food of many Arab civilizations for many years. Most of the ones sold in Western countries are dried ones. The main difference in dried and fresh dates can be seen on their skin. Dried dates have wrinkled skin, whereas fresh dates have smooth skin.

The most popular varieties of dates are Medjool and Deglet Noor dates. They have a chewy texture and an extremely sweet taste. When they are crushed, they can be used to sweeten desserts.

They exhibit several health benefits since they contain many essential nutrients. This article will be discussing some of these health benefits:

  1. They have a high fibre content: 100 grams of Deglet Noor dates contain about 8 grams of fibre, so it is a great way of increasing your intake of fibre. The main function of fibre is to regulate bowel movements. A lack of fibre in your diet may lead to constipation.
  2. Helpful for regulating blood sugar levels:  Since fibre slows digestion, blood sugar levels will not likely spike up blood sugar levels rapidly. This is because of the fact that they have a low glycemic index, which is a measure of how quickly blood sugar rises after consuming that particular food.
  3. Helps in maintaining bone health: Since they contain many nutrients like calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. They are all important nutrients for maintaining good bone health.
  4. They contain a good amount of antioxidants: Antioxidants help to limit free radicals in your body. This ensures that the cells don’t get infected.

Overall, dates are a great snack which is rich in many nutrients, and even better it satisfies your sweet tooth. Also, keep in mind, not to eat it in excess.
