What is Little Millet Good For? The smallest member of the millet family is called little millet, commonly known as milliare. Its scientific name is Panicum Sumatrense, and it is a member of the Poaceae family. Little millets that haven’t been polished are off-white or cream-coloured, whereas polished ones are white.

It is a crop that can be grown both in tropical and temperate areas, and it grows quickly and easily.

Little millet is also known as African’s millets because it was the main meal of ancestors of African descent. These are extensively cultivated in Nepal, India, and Western Myanmar. Little millet is mostly grown in the Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh.

It’s interesting to note that it goes by various names in India, including Kutki in Hindi, Samai in Tamil, and Chaama in Malayalam, Sava in Marathi, Samalu in Telugu, etc.. This nutritious food item can be used in place of rice because millets have higher levels of soluble and insoluble fibre and more vitamins, minerals, and enzymes than rice. Due to its small grains, little millet requires extremely little time to cook when compared to other millets.

Little millet can be used to stuff rolls, cook baby food, fried rice, porridge, pulao, curd rice, halwa, and other dishes. It used to be the main food source for the poor, but thanks to its incredible advantages, it is now one of the main food sources for the wealthy.
